Ocean trout might look like salmon, but it has a taste all its own.
This fish has a stunning appearance with a shape like a small torpedo, a relatively small head, and a black-spotted silver hide, replete with a pink racing stripe. Beneath this fine exterior Tasmanian Ocean Trout has bright crimson-cherry colored flesh, which fades to pale peach, Omega-3 loaded belly portion. This paler belly is full of inter-muscular fat and is so well-marbled it resembles an aquatic Wagyu at times.
Ocean trout is the common name usually applied to anadromous (or sea-run) forms of brown trout (Salmo trutta) and is often referred to as Salmo trutta morpha trutta.
The ocean trout shows anadromous reproduction, meaning it migrates to the oceans for much of its life and returns to freshwater only to spawn, like the salmon.
It also provides a lean source of omega-3 fatty acids, proteins, and minerals. Omega-3s are good fats your body can’t make itself. Other fish high in omega-3 are salmon, sardines, tuna, herring, and trout.
